Album Recco: Yard by Slow Pulp

We like to share good things on Thursdays:

I turned on Wisconsin band Slow Pulp's new record, Yard, when I got to the gym a little before 9 and texted my brother a link to the album at 9:08. "Good stuff," I said.

Understatement.

I'm terrible at describing music, so I'll pick out a couple of nice phrases from Steven Hyden's recent interview with frontwoman Emily Massey:

  • “amalgam of downer lyrics and poppy guitar jams, which bear an obvious influence from a range of early ’00s mainstream rock"

  • "sticky melodies"

  • "a broad set of stylistic turns that span from buzzy pop-punk to dark-hued country"

Maybe it wasn't the best gym record--I didn't out-lift anyone on the non-stop adrenaline surge from the eclectic tunes--but it was the best new album I've heard in awhile.
